\nLa Central de Cooperativas Agrarias Cafetaleras de los Valles de Sandi (CECOVASA) was founded in 1970 by five smaller groups of producers who wanted to come together to access markets without their profits going to local middlemen or 'coyotes.' Today the organization exports directly to the US and European markets and is one of the largest producer organizations in the country. Now, CECOVASA is an organization with 10 primary coops representing thousands of indigenous Quechua and Aymara families. The families live in the Tambopata and Inambari Valleys in the Andean regions of Puno and Cuzco. A third of the producers living in the buffer zone around the Bahuaja Sonene National Park. With the support of Fairtrade revenue, families have been able to send their children to school and many have gone on to higher education. They have used the Fairtrade Premium to develop business skills and strategy. They also purchased computers, printers and photocopiers for the main office. They have invested in farming equipment. Field agronomists are funded to train farmers in quality control, organic production techniques and environmental conservation procedures. CECOVASA has contributed to a fund for the repair and maintenance of roads to isolated areas. They made a financial contribution to the construction of a hydroelectric plant near Tunquimayo that will supply energy to the region and have installed sewer systems. They have also used the Fairtrade Premium to run reforestation programs.
