\nMarcala is a Municipality from Honduras' southwestern side, in La Paz. The land is known particularly for its exceptional coffee quality, which has exceeded its reputation throughout the national and international market. Even though there are some formal registries of coffee producing farms from 1937-1938, its modernization and intensification did not occur until early 70's which coincides with the arrival of German families to Marcala and its surroundings, thus impelling the grain's industrialization. To this day, coffee crops have become one of Marcala's most precious patrimonies. To protect the prestige, quality and namesake of the Marcala coffees, in 2005 a DOP (Protected Origin Denomination) was awarded to Café de Marcala. This was a first in Central America.
